This is an emerging crimson bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis) flower spike I noticed this morning on the tree overhanging my trash/recycling/compost area. What a marvelous image to hold for the new year!

An unexpected exotic beauty!
I don’t remember ever noticing one in the process of blooming. They look crazy!
Pretty! Nature here is white and gray this time of year.
You could cut this out and tape it to a window. Like the sheep :)
Very beautiful, never have seen this before! Your miniatures are out of this world..you are a master ! Thanks for sharing! Ange
Thanks, Ange! I think they’re native to Australia, but are widely grown here in coastal Northern California. Hummingbirds and bees love it!
At first I thought it was tiny bunches of coloured wire. We have nothing like that here – only wannabe Christmas trees as far as the eye can see.
Hmmm. I read that bottlebrush can be grown in pots. Not that I’m recommending it… I believe in local natives and similar-climate cultivars. But as I mentioned, though these plants are ubiquitous ’round here, I’ve never noticed the particular process of flowering. That’s my carry-thru thought for the new year!
