Year End Beauty

This is an emerging crimson bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis) flower spike I noticed this morning on the tree overhanging my trash/recycling/compost area. What a marvelous image to hold for the new year!

At first I thought it was tiny bunches of coloured wire. We have nothing like that here – only wannabe Christmas trees as far as the eye can see.

Hmmm. I read that bottlebrush can be grown in pots. Not that I’m recommending it… I believe in local natives and similar-climate cultivars. But as I mentioned, though these plants are ubiquitous ’round here, I’ve never noticed the particular process of flowering. That’s my carry-thru thought for the new year!
