What We’ll Be Seeing in 2016

Well. HBS/miniatures.com has announced the base kit for the 2016 Creatin’ Contest build: the Backyard Bungalow.

I’m not swooning.

The description reads “Small in size but big in style, this little building can be used for about anything you can imagine!”

And that’s good to remember. Dimensions are 12.5 inches wide x 11 inches high x 20 inches deep, with 8 of those inches being the front porch. Not shipping yet, but we can pre-order.

Ready, set, go, miniaturist citizens! We have big magics to do!

It’s cute, maybe it can be one of the new popular terms – mom cave, or a backyard man cave. Good luck, I’m sure whatever you create it will be awesome!

    • Nancy Enge says:

Thanks for your vote of confidence, Bennie. As for me, I’m against the idea of “caves” for the spaces where we most get to be ourselves, where cave = tiny, disused space. And in my tiny world, harmony and creative accommodation rule supreme :)

  2. Kat says:

If I had to spend a summer in something that small with my family there would be mutiny! But I do like the porch. Even though it looks like a horse stable ;)

    • Nancy Enge says:

Total agreement, Kat, but fortunately, no one is silly enough to ask us to. Unless… the design challenge is to accommodate a family in a 12 x 12 space? Now that is interesting (if absurd)!

    • Nancy Enge says:

No offense or criticism intended to the designers of this kit, but I will basically throw away — I mean repurpose — all of the components and bend the structure to my will and vision. That’s what it’s all about anyway, right?

  3. Barbara W. says:

At first glance, it looks like the developer’s sales office for new houses up the street from us.

    • Nancy Enge says:

Haha, BW; I thought a similar thing. Not that there’s anything wrong with developer’s sales offices. It’s just… I have realized that I’m not so much a kit basher and visionary, but prefer to start from a solid, intriguing architectural design that is more… modernist. I believe this is a turn for the cottagers and crofters. Yay for diversity and viva the collective miniaturist creative spirit.

  4. Pepper says:

A set of wheels and a tow bar and you’ve got yourself a really teeny tiny house nation build..
Yeah, I agree this is aimed at the cottagers =0)

  5. christina says:

Oh. Yes, for those of us with Modern leanings, it’s a bit of a let down after last year. I keep seeing a horse stable or barn office too. I guess that means it’s time to stretch the imagination!

  6. Blake says:

I agree on the not-swooning! It seemed like this year’s was a bit small… then they give us this! Ahaha! But challenge accepted! I am getting excited already!

  7. Keli says:

I was thinking the same….it’s a tiny house on wheels build….it’s for the cottagers….etc…

I don’t know, maybe I’ll jump way outside my comfort zone with a shabby chic cottage….with pastels, and ruffles, and girly froo-froo stuff. Art is supposed to stretch us sometimes, right?
